Havana is the political and administrative center of Cuba where we can find the essential institutions of the State and the Government. You cannot visit Cuba without visiting Havana. Its relationship with the sea and its bay has marked its architecture and history. From its relationship with the bay and the currents of the gulf the city earned its title of Capital taking it away from Santiago de Cuba. If you take a tour through all its main squares in Old Havana you can relate to its history and its development. The historical quarter of the city is the Jewel of the Crown, it’s a pride for habaneros and its one of the most attractive and better preserved colonial quarters in the Americas.
If the beaches in Varadero are unrivaled, the ones located east of Havana are almost as beautiful but more popular. Barely half an hour away from the center of the city, these neighboring beaches democratically gather together foreigners and locals. The warm waters, the cleanliness of the sand and an efficient restaurant structure will allow you to spend an unforgettable day without moving too far away from the city. Another great location to enjoy a colorful and romantic sunset.
Another way to get to know Cuba and its people is through the neighborhood projects. These are initiatives of the locals to contribute to the betterment of the communities through arts, sports and culture. Havana has some of the best known all over the island such as Callejón de Hammel, Arte Corte, Fusterland among others.
The province of Matanzas is the Cuban environment where you can find the best combination of nature and history. The city became the first modern city in Cuba and a prosperous center for the production and commercialization of coffee and sugar. It is known as the Cuban Venice given its bridges and rivers or the Athens of Cuba because of the amount of poets and writers born there. The Cuban flag was first hoisted there. It is the cradle of the national dance; Danzon and the place where baseball was played for the first time. On the southern coast we have the largest wetland in the Caribbean: The Ciénaga de Zapata. This site is a must see in your visit to Cuba as the result of its beautiful beaches and also, given the fact that the The Bay of Pigs victory occurred here and it is a moment in time that marks a complete historical landmark. Located at the center of the island, halfway between the east and west, whoever gets to dominate it is able to control de country and that is why it has been attacked by pirates and corsairs from the very early times. It has also been the center of heroic battles of our wars of independence and the site of the most decisive battle in the making of the revolution: The Battle of Santa Clara, which somehow connects the city with the hero: Che Guevara. But far beyond the figure of Che and the benefactor Martha Abreu, the former province of Las Villas has a unique avant-garde spirit. Its rock and film festival, as well as the movies events and the ample cultural life so prove it every year.
The Monument to Che Guevara is a mandatory stop for those who tour the island from end to end. There we can see the niches containing the remains of Che as well as his comrades in the Guerrillas. There is also a museum to get to know the life and work of the Heroic Guerrillero.
