About Cuba

Located in the Eastern part of the island it is the fourth largest province in Cuba.  This province hosts  the place where Christopher Colombus landed in 1492 (Bariay).  The elegant city of Holguín is known as the city of parks since many of them decorate its urban design.   La Loma de la Cruz  is one of the most popular places in Cuba and it takes its name from a wooden Cross that exists on top and which is believed to be a protector for the city’s inhabitants.  The first cross was placed in 1790 and was brought up by the frail Francisco Antonio Alegría from Holguin’s Franciscan community and that’s exactly where the “Romerías de Mayo started and which is one of the most important festivities nationwide today. The Loma de la Cruz  is a lookout post from where you can enjoy a great view of the city, as well as the rural and mountainous  areas of the province.

This province is to be found east of the island. It was named like this after the political and administrative division of Cuba in 1976.  Granma is the name of the boat that brought Fidel Castro and other 81 fighters from Mexico to Cuba to continue the armed struggle against Batista’s dictatorship.  This province has a rich mixture of history, traditions and nature. At La Demajagua sugar mill plantation near Manzanillo (one of its most important cities together with Bayamo) Carlos Manuel de Céspedes –considered the father of the nation –,  started the wars of Independence against Spain on October 10, 1868.

Known as the land between rivers the province of Gauntanamo has a number of natural attractions which would, in themselves, be enough to add fame to the name.  However, and quite unfortunately, its name has been connected to a military base and more recently to a prison totally illegal and imposed.

The history of the territory connects it with the most outstanding deeds in the Wars of Independence, including the landing of Jose Martí and his incorporation in the military actions.  The main city shows a mixture of colonial architecture with French influence which arrived only to establish itself here after the Haitian Revolution   and which became part of our culture in either our dances, food, religion, rhythms and traditions.

One of the most famous works of national engineering is the Viaducto La Farola which connects Guantanamo with the first settlement established by the Spaniards in the XVI century: Baracoa. In that city, both historical and natural environments are very well preserved.  The area also includes a network of natural parks and reserves which turn the province into a mandatory destination for those who enjoy clean air and nature. There are also a number of options for nautical activities all along the rivers and beaches as well as hikes along trails filled with wild life.  There are important National Parks such as Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt, Las Cuchillas del Toa y el Yunque.  In the easternmost part of the province we can find La Punta de Maisí with  an impressive work of preservation for the aboriginal culture as well as the culture around the coffee and Cocoa plantations.  Marine terraces dominate de seascape here.
